Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Twin Lakes are tucked into a gorgeous double cirque at the Montana-Wyoming border. The 9,800- foot lakes sit in a hanging valley above Rock Creek Canyon in the Shoshone National Forest, the first national forest in the United States. The 75-acre lakes rest in glacial depressions below the Twin Lakes headwall.

Atop the 1 0,737-foot headwall is the ski tow used for the Red Lodge International Ski Racing Camp, a training ground for young skiers. The hike crosses the vast tundra of the plateau, carpeted with wild alpine flowers, then drops into a tight glacial- carved valley."

There is a crying need for trails that allow 10 year olds to scramble up and down rocks. They can do long slogs but they light up with the prospect of jungle gym like rock clamboring. This trail fils the bill admirably. My 10 year old (Evan) spent lots more time than was necessary overcoming the slabs that interrupt the short trail to the falls. Bur he loved it - as he loved rock jumping up and down the primeval Beartooth Falls area. We were all by ourselves at the edge of the maw-like falls.
