Timberline Lake

Timberline Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A moderately long day trip to an idyllic mountain lake. The West Fork of Rock Creek Road (FR 71) actually boasts four separate trailheads, all in close proximity. Three vehicle
campgrounds are also found in this area, and the lower val-
ley has several residential developments.

Since the road starts right in Red Lodge, the lower valley feels like the town’s backyard wilderness. The West Fork road is paved for the first 7 miles up to Basin Creek Campground. This is a heavily used area, both for day trips and extended backcountry excursions."

"A moderately long day trip or easy overnighter to an idyllic mountain lake. Similar to the nearby trail up Basin Creek, the trail to Timberline Lake passes through a forested environment. Unlike Basin Creek, much of this route burned when the 2008 Cascade Fire swept through the upper West Fork Valley. As with almost all trails in the Custer National Forest section of the Absaroka-Bear tooth Wilderness, this one is well maintained and marked. The corridor to Timberline Lake was excluded from the Absaroka-Bear tooth Wilderness." Read more
