Timberline and Gertrude Lakes

Timberline and Gertrude Lakes Professional Review and Guide

"Timberline Lake sits in a basin below Silver Run Plateau at the base of a gorgeous granite cirque. Towering above the 21 -acre lake are snow-capped peaks, including the 1 2,500-foot Silver Run Peak. Lake Gertrude, a 6-acre tarn just downstream from Timberline Lake, sits in a forested recess a half mile to the east.

Both lakes lie within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and offer excellent trout fishing. The trail begins by the West Fork of Rock Creek and climbs through the Timberline Creek drainage, surrounded on both sides by the 1 0,000-foot Silver Run Plateau. The hike passes through the burn area from the 2008 Cascade Fire. The burn area has a lush new understory of vegetation and wildflowers."

This is easily one of the best day hikes I've ever taken. The early part of the hike takes you through burnt-out lodgpole pines and climbs to a plateau where, as the previous reviewer states, you can begin to see the peaks around you. But don't stop there or you risk missing out on one of the most beautiful mountain lakes I've ever seen. Past the plateau and first little lake, there is another incline made of rockfall, and above it... Wow. There aren't even words. A vast lake encircled with craggy peaks and waterfalls pouring into it. We saw bears and other fauna, but just laying back and relxing with such scenery was worth all the effort of getting there. The trip back down was shrouded by rainclouds, but this is definitely a keeper!
I hiked this trail with my 17-year old son and it was great. The climb to the plateau is a good work out, and you get some views, but mostly of the road below in the valley. The payoff is when you hit the plateau and have a sensational view, almost 360, of the peaks in the distance. A thunderstorm suddenly rolled in, so we descended quickly and didn't have a chance to explore the plateau -- that will be for the return trip.
