Sundance Pass Backpacking

Sundance Pass (Backpacking) Professional Review and Guide

"A fairly rugged, two- or three-day hike for experienced hikers. This well-maintained and heavily used trail is not only one of the most scenic in the Beartooths, but it’s only a short drive from the Billings area. This trail offers absolutely spectacular scenery. From Sundance Pass, for example, vistas include 12,000-foot mountains such as 12,548-foot Whitetail Peak, and the Beartooth Plateau, a huge mass of contiguous land above 10,000 feet.

Hikers are also treated to views of glaciers and obvious results of glaciation, exposed Precambrian rock, and waterfalls. And watch for mountain goats, deer, golden eagles, and gyrfalcons. Goats are frequently seen from First and Second Rock Lakes. Special attractions: Spectacular mountain scenery, especially the view from Sundance Pass."

Growing up in Montana, it is easy to take for granted the beauty of the Beartooth mountains. Although this trail sees more people than it use to, it was still an amazing experience and the higher up you climb the more solitude you will enjoy. The opportunities to fish were abundant and the fish were plentiful. Coming over Sundance Pass is a spectacular sight that will be difficult to top.
