Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway Professional Review and Guide
"A 27-mile paved and gravel road alongside pretty streams in the scenic East Pioneer and West Pioneer mountains. Set between the granite peaks of the East Pioneer and West Pioneer mountain ranges, the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway gently ascends a 7,800-foot divide between the Wise River and Grasshopper Creek drainages. The two-lane road is paved except the 16-mile segment on the south end that has a gravel surface. There are frequent turnouts, traffic is light, and the highway is well maintained. The scenery, traveling in either direction, is exceptional.
Special attractions: Outstanding trout fishing in numerous streams and beaver ponds, crystal-digging area for rockhounds, proposed East Pioneer Wilderness, abundant wildlife, Coolidge, a silver-mining ghost town, Elkhorn Hot Springs. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
