Bull River

Bull River Professional Review and Guide

"The Bull River offers a quiet float in view of Montana’s snow-topped Cabinet Mountains, from which the river finds its source. Paddlers who carry binoculars may spot bighorn sheep on either side of the river valley. Some will startle moose and otters. The trip starts in a soggy meadow dotted with cottonwood trees and beaver ponds. The meadows gradually melt into forests toward the take-out.

While the scenery is wonderful, this is not a wilderness trip. Cars on SR 56 are frequently within earshot, and the two-lane highway is visible in places. Most of the land in sight is federally owned, and managed by the Kootenai National Forest. But the valley floor itself is mostly private, and dotted with houses. Livestock has overgrazed the riverbank in places."
