Wagon Mountain Trail from Packer Meadows Lewis and Clark/Nez Perce National Historic Trail Professional Review and Guide

"For thousands of years, before the Europeans arrived, the Nez Perce crossed the rugged Bitterroot Mountains from their Idaho homeland to hunt buffalo on the eastern plains of Montana. They called the trail K’Useyneisskt, meaning “Trail to the Buffalo Country.” This route was also used when the Nez Perce were fleeing General Howard’s army in the Nez Perce War of 1 877. To the Nez Perce, these trails are part of their sacred land and were once sustained through continual use. The Wagon Mountain Trail connects Lee Creek to Packer Meadows, following a segment of the Nez Perce and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trails."
