South O’Brien Creek Loop

South O’Brien Creek Loop Professional Review and Guide

"O’Brien Creek forms on the east slope of the Grave Creek Range west of Missoula and north of the Blue Mountain Recreation Area. The creek, a tributary of the Bitterroot River, flows 1 0 miles to its confluence with the river just north of Maclay Flats.

En route, the waterway skirts the northern base of Blue Mountain. The South O’Brien Creek Loop is a little known gem that follows the waterway and loops back on the north canyon wall. Along the way, the path weaves through canyons, open meadows, and lush, forested waterways. Overlooks from the trail offer views across Missoula to Mount Jumbo and Mount Sentinel. The trail is closed from December 1 through May 1 5 to protect wintering elk and deer populations."

One of many very nice but not spectacular trails along the east side of the Bitterroot Mountains.

Gorgeous trail! It is lined with wild raspberry bushes, running water, and charming waterfalls. It's a little steep on the way up and rocky, but the way down feels like a breeze. My only complaint, as a dogowner, is the leash only policy.
