Sleeping Woman Trail to Cha-paa-qn

Sleeping Woman Trail to Cha-paa-qn Professional Review and Guide

"Cha-paa-qn is Salish for treeless peak or shining peak. It is the prominent pyramid-shaped mountain on Missoula’s western horizon in the Lolo National Forest. Three trails climb to Reservation Divide and ascend the talus rock summit of Cha-paa-qn: the Sleeping Woman Trail, the Reservation Divide East Trail (Hike 50), and the Kennedy Creek Trail.

The Sleeping Woman Trail—this trail—is the shortest but steepest route to the 7,996-foot peak. The trail climbs through a pine and fir forest above Stony Creek Canyon to Reservation Divide. The last half mile to the summit is a slow-moving scramble over scree. From the summit above the timberline are far-reaching, 360-degree vistas of the Bitterroot Mountains; the Mission, Swan, Sapphire, Cabinet, and Bison Ranges; and the Rattlesnake and Great Burn Wilderness Areas."

On the cool side, pummeled with graupel, lots of huck plants, need to come back in another month for picking!

Classic Montana hike through a beautiful forest passing a lake and the falls destination is spectacular. The trail is well worn and nicely maintained, a good hike for all ages and fitness levels.
