The hike to Boulder Lake is through an area that has been through a fire. There wasn't much shade through the snags of what was timber. The temperatures were in the 90's so shade would have been great. Boulder Lake was beautiful however. It was spared from the fire. We were the only ones on the Lake the night we stayed there. It was still a little swampy on the trail around the lake. A couple of us had wet, muddy shoes before we made it to our camp site. It was the kind of mud that would take your shoe off if you laces were loose. A suggestion, would be to have a small saw. The fire wood has been pretty well picked over.

This trail may be best appreciated as part of an overnight trip. I am used to the higher altitude lakes like in the area near Bozeman and Big Sky, and was not as awed at my arrival at this lake. Also be aware that the trail work both ways gaining and losing altitude on the outbound and return trips. There is water for the dog at reasonable intervals, however the trail does get pretty warm so be sure and pack enough for you (this is from my experience of not toting enough and experiencing a little dehydration.)
