Mount Jumbo Loop

Mount Jumbo Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This hike starts in the Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood of Missoula. Though you park in the grid of the city, changes in altitude quickly alter the dynamics of your surroundings. Turn-of-the-twentieth-century homes with lawns and invasive Norwegian maples are soon replaced by native grasslands of fescue and bunchgrass, creating prime deer and elk habitat. The summit of the mountain is forested in areas and offers shelter for mountain lion and black bear.

There have even been reports of a band of gypsy wolves that occasionally make an appearance. Views from the top include the Rattlesnake Wilderness to the north and the Bitterroot Mountains to the south, as well as a bird’s-eye gander of the Missoula Valley. This hike is strenuous, but with a little grit and determination, the top is quite attainable after negotiating switchbacks with a medium grade. For a shorter option, consider just tackling the “L,” which is encountered on the downhill part of the loop."
