Missoula and Vicinity Professional Review and Guide

"Missoula is one of the few places in Montana where the birding is excellent year-round. Missoula is the largest city in western Montana. It is popularly known as the “garden city” due to the abundance of trees and shrubs in town. The Missoula valley was a popular area for the Salish and Blackfeet tribes in the years before white settlers arrived. Missoula takes its name from the Salish word “Lm-i-sule-tiku,” which means “by or near the cold, chilling waters.”

The city rests on the bed of an ancient, glacial lake, now the central convergence for five mountain valleys. Lewis and Clark camped along the Bitterroot River just south of present-day Missoula in 1805 and 1806. Missoula became a natural trading place and even a strategic point for the military during the war with the Nez Perce Indians, thus Fort Missoula was established. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information."
