The Lolo Trail includes a small but perilous section of the historic Lewis and Clark Trail along Lolo Creek. For thousands of years, the Nez Perce (the Nee-Me-Poo) used the Lolo Trail to cross the Continental Divide into the Bitterroot Valley to hunt buffalo with the Salish people. Conversely, the Salish, living east of the Bitterroots, used this route to reach the salmon-rich Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers in Idaho and trade with the Nez Perce. Lewis and Clark also used this historic route during 1 805 and 1 806. (The Lewis and Clark Trail stretches 4,000 miles, from the Mississippi River above Saint Louis to the Pacific Ocean near Astoria, Washington.)
