Grand Menard Discovery Trail

Grand Menard Discovery Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Ninemile Valley is a wide, alpine valley in the Lolo National Forest 21 miles northwest of Missoula. The historic Ninemile Ranger Station and Remount Depot is located four miles from the valley’s confluence with the Clark Fork River. The Grand Menard Discovery Trail, less than a mile north of the ranger station, is a self-guided interpretive trail.

A brochure at the ranger station and trailhead describes the history of the Ninemile Valley, logging in the area, irrigation, the life cycle of trees, pine nuts, knapweed, wildlife, and the effects of fire. The rambling nature trail has two loops that wind through a ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest. The inner loop is a 0.6-mile graveled, wheelchair-accessible trail. From the trail are views of Stark Mountain and the fire lookout."

Very nice hike. Last of the week for me before heading back to Texas. Wear sturdy boots as you will cross several boulder fields (at least that I what I call them). Beautiful waterfall and a variety of terrain.

A poetic canyon to explore -- lush with all one could want in a moderate afternoon hike. From traversing fallen trees across the rushing mountain stream, to craning our necks at the sheer cliff walls, to being startled by a beastly moose ten feet in front of us on the trail .. it was a gorgeous hike. Best of all was how dramtically the landscape seemed to change -- from dense woods to burnt woods, to rocky terrain to marshland. And the trail goes on for miles. Highly recommended!
