Council Grove State Park

Council Grove State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Council Grove State Park marks the location of the July 1 6, 1 855 council between Isaac Stevens (Governor of Indian Affairs) and the Salish (Flathead), Kootenai, and the Pend d’ Orielle (Kalispel) Indians. The council resulted in the signing of the Hellgate Treaty, which created the Flathead Reservation in the Jocko and Mission Valleys.

The reluctant tribes relinquished their 1 2 million acres of ancestral lands—almost all of their land in Western Montana— for the 1.25-million acre Flathead Reservation. The Salish were removed from the Bitterroot Valley."

Took a hike up to the falls this morning, nice trail! It was ice covered due to others packing it, but that is typical of winter hiking. Very gradual incline. Can't wait to do it in the summer and go farther up

This well maintained trail has been one of the biggest treats of my hiking in the Bitterroot. The visual variety, from boulder fields to streamside forest to rocky prominences, provides an enjoyable, engaging hike that will delight you. The falls are an absolutly inspiring destination, suitable for a picnic lunch or dinner. It provides an easily reachable respite when you only have a few hours.
