The refuge borders the banks of the Bitterroot River and is surrounded by fertile ranch and farmland. It is a premier bird watching habitat with migrating and resident waterfowl. The refuge includes a chain of ponds, wildlife viewing areas, a meadow, river bottom woodlands, riparian and wetland habitats, and a visitor center."
