Babcock Creek Trail to Mormon Spring

Babcock Creek Trail to Mormon Spring Professional Review and Guide

"Babcock Creek, a tributary of Spring Creek, is located in the Rock Creek drainage of the Sapphire Mountains. The creek’s headwaters begin at Mormon Spring and Horse Pasture Spring, then flow through a narrow canyon on the southern base of Babcock Mountain. The Babcock Creek Trail drops into Babcock Canyon and follows the creek up canyon through a conifer forest with riparian vegetation. The hike traverses talus slopes, crosses the creek numerous times, passes overlooks, and leads to Mormon Spring in a flower-filled meadow. From the spring, the trail climbs the west slope of Burnt Mountain to a ridge with far-reaching views of the Sapphire Range."

"Babcock Creek is located in the heart of wildlife country. It is a side drainage that flows into Rock Creek in the lowers reaches of its course. The trail begins at the mouth of Spring Creek. The cliffs that tower on the hillside above are prime habitat for a local herd of bighorn sheep.

Chances are high that you will encounter part of this herd on your journey. The Babcock Creek Trail (91) extends around the base of the cliffs and 1.0 mile to the north, where it turns east and climbs the steep confines of Babcock Creek."
