Hellgate Ridgeline Professional Review and Guide
"The Hellgate Canyon Trail climbs from the floor of Hellgate Canyon up the forested north slope of Mount Sentinel. Access is from the Kim Williams Nature Trail at the University of Montana, an abandoned railroad bed on the banks of the Clark Fork River. The strenuous trail climbs 2.5 miles up the south wall of Hellgate Canyon, gaining 1 ,600 feet before the final quarter-mile ascent of Mount Sentinel. The peak of Mount Sentinel towers over the city at an elevation of 5,1 58 feet. From the summit are sweeping vistas across Missoula Valley to the Bitterroot Mountains and Frenchtown, and across Hellgate Canyon to the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness."
