Angela Well

Angela Well Professional Review and Guide

"One of the hottest and most isolated geothermal resources in Montana. The spectacular white terraces around this hot water well look like a miniature version of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. Montana’s easternmost geothermal resource is also one of its most remarkable. More than 1,200 gallons per minute of 185-degree-F water discharge from a horizontal pipe connected to a mineral-encrusted wellhead. There’s a strong sulfur smell here, indicative of the large amount of minerals in the water. The torrent of hot water pours onto a snow-white terrace about 50 feet in diameter and 4 feet high. Older dry terraces to the south of the active terrace attest to the rapid mineralization effects of the water in past decades.

The water on the terrace exceeds 150 degrees F. Hot water running down the face of the terrace enters a pool about 100 feet long, varying from 6 to 20 feet wide. The pool is only a foot or so deep, and the bottom is quite muddy. Determined bathers can ease into the pool’s far end and move toward the terrace until a comfortable soaking temperature is found. Because of its isolated location, Angela Well is rarely visited. Primitive, with the remains of an old bathhouse near the well."

While searching for a hot springs somewhere in Eastern Montana or North Dakota, I came across Angela Well. My friends and I asked several people about it, and no one had heard of it, so we were a little skeptical that we would find anything. The directions that were included from trails.com brought us right to Angela Well. It was well worth our road trip. The hot spring is located in the middle of nowhere, so it was quiet and relaxing. I would definitely suggest bringing something that you can sit on, because the bottom is very slimy. We have already decided that we will make another trip to Angela Well!
