East Dam Creek Trail

East Dam Creek Trail Professional Review and Guide

"East Dam Creek is a small tributary of Mill Creek. The creek trickles through a narrow side canyon between Mill Creek and The Pyramid. It is also a horsepacking route and cross-country ski trail. This hike follows the lower creekside portion of the trail to open meadows and overlooks. The trail makes connections with the Anderson Ridge Trail, East Fork Mill Creek, and the Moose Park Trail along the western base of The Pyramid."

Dryer than normal summer and the creek was a trickle. Passed over 2 very wet muddy marsh areas that could not be bypassed. So in the melt season after June it would likely be very wet and high dry boots needed. It runs thru the burn of the Wicked Creek fire of about 2010. The fire created a great open feeling. The flora was played out and dull but in the spring it would be great from about 6/15 - 7/1. Fire in this region creates new meadows and food for critters. Grizzly are now seen in this region. I began from the trail head and walked to the big bald dome at about 7500'. It was, I guess about 3+ miles to this point. It took me about 2 hours but I stopped for some photos and scoping of the nice open views to the mountains. This part of the hike is surrounded by mountains. At the dome of the bald it give a fantastic 360 degree view of the entire Mill Creek region. The assent was about 1500', the decent took 1:10 at a steady pace. I was hiking with 2 dogs and 4 horse riders went out before we left. It would be advised that you should be sure and carry bear spray, and make some noise. I enjoyed this hike enough to bring my horses back in a few days. A must do in July.
