Chico Hot Springs Lodge

Chico Hot Springs Lodge Professional Review and Guide

"A romantic turn-of-the-century resort that combines Victorian refinement with easy-going Western hospitality. The hot springs feed a large sheltered soaking pool and an adjacent outdoor swimming pool. Gourmet meals are served in what is consistently rated one of the best restaurants in Montana.

Tucked beneath towering 10,921-foot Emigrant Peak on the border of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, Chico Hot Springs Lodge offers the perfect escape from modern civilization. The 113-degree-F hot springs are piped into a 10-foot by 30-foot soaking pool, which is kept at around 104 degrees F year-round. The soaking pool is partially enclosed but connects with a large open-air swimming pool that maintains a 96-degree-F temperature. The outdoor pool was actually indoors until 1957, when the roof over the pool collapsed. Swimmers seemed to prefer the crisp air and the sparkling stars, and the pool has been kept open to the elements ever since. The pools can be entered either through the Chico saloon or from the white-clapboard main lodge. Developed."

Although not a hiking trail, this destination is a great visit after a long hike. My family has visited Chico many times, and we keep traveling 500+ miles to come back. While not "roughing it", it keeps the rugged charm by not having TV's or phones in the guest rooms. The hot springs are TO DIE for, especially underneath the starlight. There are oppurtunities for horseback riding and fishing, as well. The restaurant is pricey, but you get what you pay for. To top it all off, the main lodge is reportedly haunted (which is a plus for me, but I guess it would make others get creeped out, so maybe stay in one of the other buildings). I'm trying to convince my fiance to book the Honeymoon cabin for our honeymoon.
