Kootenai River

Kootenai River Professional Review and Guide

"Half of Montana’s 99-mile share of the Kootenai River was flooded by Libby Dam. So what remains of interest to anglers? With the recent combination of a new discharging system from Libby Dam, spawning closures, and slot limits, the Kootenai is fast becoming one of the finest tailwaters in the west.

Because the river just clips the northwestern corner of the state, most Montanans never see the Kootenai. Kalispell anglers who were accustomed to catching 8-inch cutthroat in the streams around their area, have discovered that they can drive the 100 miles to the Kootenai and be astonished by the big rainbow. The average creeled rainbow—usually in excellent condition—measure between 12-14 inches. And anglers catch fish from the Kootenai at about the same rate as from other more highly touted blue-ribbon streams of Montana. Key species: Kamloops rainbow trout, westslope cutthroat trout, kokanee, and whitefish."
