Kalispell and Vicinity

Kalispell and Vicinity Professional Review and Guide

"The area around Kalispell is a fun place to watch birds. Vaux’s Swift is one species you can find right in the middle of town. A massive ice age glacier was responsible for the landscape patterns seen today in the Flathead Valley. The magnificent mountain ranges to the northeast (Whitefish Range, Glacier National Park), east (Swan Range), and southeast (Mission Range) of Kalispell resisted the power of this large glacier and are a testimonial to that era. Kalispell is named after the Kalispell Indians, relatives of the Flathead Indians.

The area around Kalispell was first settled in 1881, when Angus McDonald of the Hudson’s Bay Company established a post here. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information."
