Peters Creek Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Signs at both ends of the town of Hungry Horse read “The Best Dam Town in the West,” and you will certainly find some friendly people here. The town is named after—of all things—a couple of hungry horses. It’s true. Tex and Jerry were hungry after wandering off during a tough winter in 1900.

They both survived, and the town was named in their honor. Weird, eh? Hungry Horse Dam, built across the South Fork of the Flathead River in 1953, is just 15 miles from the west entrance to Glacier National Park, but it doesn’t get as much use as you might think. Many visitors just rush right by, not even knowing it’s here."
