Crow Creek Falls

Crow Creek Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A day hike to a stunning waterfall in a place you don’t expect it. You’ll find plenty of parking, plus undeveloped camping at and near the trailhead. This is an excellent early-season hike that you can safely take after the Crow Creek opens in mid-May.

The trail is in excellent shape all the way, and it’s obvious the Forest Service is taking great care to make this route a nice hike. The waterfall is truly remarkable!"

"The rewarding drive to the trailhead takes you from open prairie to deep forests of fir and juniper in the Elkhorn Mountains. Crow Creek Trail is mostly level and leads you through forests and meadows to the foot of Crow Creek Falls that plummets for 40 feet over a steep rugged cliff. Wading is certainly possible, but the vigorous whirlpool may be too dangerous for swimming. Both backpackers and day-hikers will enjoy this satisfying trek."

First, let me state that the guide is incorrect on two fronts. #1, the mileage to Sheep LAKE is about 4.5 miles from Lower Coffin Lake (not two miles as reported). #2, The map is incorrect. Sheep Lake is not to the east as it describes. Sheep Lake is just north of Coffin Lake. I wish these guide books would take the time to get it right.

Coffin Lake is wonderful. Lots of cow patties, lots of mountain bikers, but a peaceful trail and a great place to camp. The side trip to Sheep lake is well worth it if backpacking in for a few days.
