Coquina Lake

Coquina Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Perhaps as a precautionary measure against overuse, most forest maps omit the spur trail to Coquina Lake—but on the ground it is clearly recognizable. The round-trip makes a lovely day hike and is well suited for folks looking for a pleasant outing with good scenic value and fishing. Don’t expect much overnight solitude; a dozen tents may occupy campsites here on any given summer weekend.

Berthed in the evening shade of 8,984-foot Castle Crag, the lakes of Sheafman Creek reside in relative anonymity 10 miles northwest of Hamilton. The entire trail is pack-animal accessible and well suited for either a full day excursion or an easy overnight trip. In fact, the only real hazards are four wet crossings of Sheafman Creek; these fords remain negotiable during spells of high water, although in late June the current is swift and frigid enough to discourage any misstep."
