Blodgett Canyon Overlook

Blodgett Canyon Overlook Professional Review and Guide

"This short, well-maintained trail is suitable for hikers of all abilities. The route requires an unhurried forty-five-minute walk, crossing the crest of Romney Ridge to reach a collection of stony outcrops at the overlook area. Beyond the overlook unfolds a scene of rugged splendor, with talus-strewn couloirs and granite faces rising along the length of Blodgett Canyon and to the crest of Printz Ridge."

"The Blodgett Canyon Overlook is a spectacular site on an exposed rocky ridge. The overlook includes awesome vistas into Blodgett Canyon, the massive vertical walls surrounding the canyon, the Canyon Creek drainage, the Bitterroot Valley, the town of Hamilton, and the Sapphire Mountains. All of these views are afforded with relatively little elevation gain. This stunning hike begins at Canyon Creek and leads north up to the overlook atop Romney Ridge, dividing Blodgett Canyon from Canyon Creek. Benches are provided at the various lookout points."

"A great day hike on a newly rebuilt trail with an incredible view and interpretive displays"

I was not very excited by the trail itself. Though well maintained and easily followed, it lacks the variety of some of the more interesting canyon trails. Add that to a series of repetitious switchbacks and it lulls you into a complacency that is hard to shake. The overlook, however, quickly dispels any doldrums that might linger! The view is (forgive me for using a trite description) breathtaking! No other vantage I know gives you quite the same flavor of the immenseness of Selway-Bitterroot wilderness.
