North Big Hole / Saddle Mountain Trails

North Big Hole / Saddle Mountain Trails Professional Review and Guide

"The Big Hole is home to only a few hundred people in small towns like Jackson, with a population of fifty people—and sixty dogs. Nearby Saddle Mountain trailheads are on Lost Trail Pass, named by the Lewis and Clark Expedition when they became lost here en route to the Pacific in 1805.

The ungroomed trails offer backcountry skiers days on different trails. Controlled dogs are permitted on the trails. Weather blows in quickly. Backcountry travelers use skis with metal edges and carry packs with extra clothing, food, and survival gear. Skiers should understand avalanche hazards, have route-finding skills, and be able to ski in white-out conditions. Surface quality: Skier-tracked backcountry."
