Marias River

Marias River Professional Review and Guide

"The isolated Marias River originates east of Glacier National Park and features spectacular badlands and sandstone cliffs reminiscent of the Missouri River. Its suitable for beginners its entire length.

Summers along the Marias are generally short, but they can be devilishly hot. This area experiences extreme temperature fluctuations, and water temperatures in the river can get very warm in summer. Natural siltation, along with irrigation returns, accounts for the poor water quality found in most of the river."

My wife, teenage son and I kayaked from the confluence of the Marias river (Cut Bank Creek and Two Medicine River) to Williamson Park (south of Shelby). We made it an overnight trip for a fun weekend. The water was great, about 4,000 cfs based on USGS gauge, higher than usual for that time of year. A fun trip!
