Mammoth Hot Springs, WY, to Cooke City, MT via Tower Junction Professional Review and Guide

"The birdlife of Yellowstone is highly underrated. Although bird concentrations are not extraordinary, the quality of birdlife is. The tall expansion bridge known as the High Bridge, approximately 0.6 mile east of Mammoth (following mileage readings taken from Mammoth Junction), is a good place to look for Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, Common Raven, Vesper Sparrow, and Western Meadowlark.

At 4.6 miles, the Undine Picnic Area, look for American Dipper feeding in the fast moving water of Lava Creek and Ruby-crowned Kinglet in the tops of conifers. The Northern Pygmy-Owl is sometimes found in this area in the winter. Heading further east to the 6.4 mile mark, watch for a series of ponds on the north side of the road known as Blacktail Pond. Species often found here include Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Cinnamon Teal, Gadwall, Ringed-neck Duck, Lesser Scaup, Barrow’s Goldeneye, Ruddy Duck, Wilson’s Phalarope, Red-winged Blackbird, and Yellow-headed Blackbird."
