Nelson Lake

Nelson Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Here is a lightly used and delightfully primitive trail. The route is less than 3 miles long but is more demanding than many other Bitterroot trails of comparable length, with many segments of poor tread that make for ponderous route finding on both the inbound and outbound legs of the hike.

Nelson Lake is unusual among the Bitterroot backcountry lakes in the sheer volume of the dam at its outlet—in this case an enormous rockslide that predated settlement of the Bitterroot Valley by centuries."
