Flat Creek

Flat Creek Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"To many hikers familiar with other parts of the Selway-Bitterroot, the obscure country west of the Selway River is very much terra incognita. Trails in this remote region are typically steep and difficult to follow, but the Flat Creek Trail, with its excellent tread and wide, sweeping switchbacks, is a welcome departure from the norm.

In the aftermath of the Lonely/Wilderness Complex Fire of 2000, you can observe the natural succession of vegetation as new shrubs and trees take root and the forest is born anew. (Note: The Flat Creek Trail is deceptive. The outbound hike—almost entirely downhill to the Little Clearwater River—requires a steady climb on the return trip; allow extra time and carry extra water for the hike out.)"
