Pine Butte Swamp Preserve

Pine Butte Swamp Preserve Professional Review and Guide

"The 18,000-acre Pine Butte Swamp Preserve is the largest isolated wetland complex abutting the East Front of the Rocky Mountains in Montana. Owned and administered by The Nature Conservancy, the preserve safeguards crucial habitat for grizzly bears that venture out on to the plains. The area also is a haven for a rich array of native plant communities and associated birdlife.

Access is limited to protect natural features, but good birding can be had from the roads. Before hiking cross-country on the preserve, please obtain permission from the Preserve Manager. The Nature Conservancy also runs guided birding tours and natural history workshops on the preserve. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information."
