Clary Coulee

Clary Coulee Professional Review and Guide

"This hike climbs up Clary Coulee, then traverses high across the slopes of the Rocky Mountain Front. The hike ends atop a lofty perch that commands sweeping views of the front ranges and the High Plains.

To begin the trek, pass through the gate and turn left to acquire a footpath that runs west along the fenceline. Soon it switchbacks upward through a loose woodland of Douglas fir and limber pine. Look back for ever-expanding vistas of Ear Mountain and the surrounding reefs as the path makes its way up Clary Coulee. Near the head of the drainage, the path enters an old burn en route to the high and windswept country at the base of Choteau Mountain’s limestone cliffs. The trail surmounts a pass where the firs grow in a ground-hugging krummholz form, pruned back by icy winter gales."
