Sheep Creek Falls

Sheep Creek Falls Professional Review and Guide

"Located between the towns of Cooke City and Silver Gate, Sheep Creek Falls is a great stop to beat the summer crowds of Yellowstone Park and the Beartooth Highway.

The walk is for skilled hikers looking for a short, trail-less scramble along a creek to a seldom-visited yet spectacular waterfall. Water comes down a nearly vertical 100-foot slide into a cliffy ravine."

More Sheep Creek Falls Professional Reviews and Guides

"Sheep Creek forms on the east slope of Mineral Mountain just outside Yellowstone National Park. The creek tumbles 2.5 miles south, where it feeds Soda Butte Creek between Cooke City and Silver Gate. An unmaintained path leads to Sheep Creek Falls, a magnificent, full-bodied waterfall on the creek. The towering 1 0,000-foot peaks of Miller Mountain, Sunset Peak, and Mineral Mountain surround the drainage. Although it is only 0.3 miles to the thunderous cataract, it is not an easy hike. It is a scramble up the canyon, climbing over downfall timber. There is not a defined trail; rather, the hike just follows the watercourse of Sheep Creek. The route climbs through the burn area from the 1 988 Yellowstone fires, now thick with regrowth."
