Ousel Falls

Ousel Falls Professional Review and Guide

"Ousel Falls is a stunning, powerful waterfall. The wide, awesome falls crashes down over the canyon walls to the narrow canyon floor. The mist created by the falls feeds the moss covering the rocks. The trail to the falls is abundant with wildflowers and has a sweeping 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. Although there is a well-established trail to the falls, there are no trailhead signs or trail markers.

From the parking area, the unmarked but easily seen trail heads west. Follow the level trail 0.2 miles to a footpath leading off to the left. Take this left fork about 200 yards to another fork. Again take the left path. The forested trail follows along the canyon’s edge. The cascading South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River can be heard below."

The actual falls get 5 stars, as well as the stream the way it carves its way down. The trail is a bit over-groomed, its more like a National Park boardwalk (made of pea gravel) than a trail. They should pave it an make it even more accessible if they are going to go this far. They want all dogs on leashes and want you to pick up after them. We are in the woods right? I am all for picking up around the neighborhood and in public parks etc, but this is the woods, does someone pick up after the bears, deer, elk, moose or horses? Leaving my personal opinions out this is a great trail for little ones both in difficulty and distance with plenty of rest places along the way and some very impressive falls at the end. It is a downhill first hike so be prepared to do the hard work on the way home. This is not the back country as houses from the Yellowstone Club poke out through the trees even as your gazing over the falls.

The falls are impressive, and this is a great trail to take your small children on, just watch out for the steep drop off at times. The trail is perfectly groomed and has road mix down for a very neat modern look. If you are looking for a rustic single track trail this is not it. There are signs up to tell you to pick up after your dogs, so if you like to hike to get away from civilization then then you never feel to far away here. I say if your out where other animals poop, then dogs should be able to poop too. Pick up poo in city parks. There are many beautiful scenes along the way, so bring your camera. This trail is just what you would expect from an area being consumed by the growth in Big Sky

Cool trail that is well taken care of. Pretty easy hike, good for families with younger kids who are looking for an easy, short hike. At the end of the hike, the waterfall is very cool and there is access to the bottom of the falls - you can get within 50 feet of the falls. Definitely worth the time.

Fairly easy hike. Trail guide from Trails.com is rather outdated. The path to the falls is well-marked, wide and fairly smooth, but areas of the descent are fairly steep. The falls is very impressive in the Spring, and there are many small trails around the falls area. All together, we spent about 1.5 hours exploring. Falls area is probably a cool spot during the summer months. There are picnic tables near the falls, although they were very wet from the spray the falls was generating. Probably better for picnicing during the summer months.

Nice and easy, but rewarding. The posted description on getting to the trailhead is not accurate. The highway does not end... at the trail head. The trail begins at Ousel Falls Park, clearly marked on the left as one ascends the mountain.
