Upper Missouri River National Wild, Scenic, and Recreational Floats

Upper Missouri River National Wild, Scenic, & Recreational Floats Professional Review and Guide

"Once more the Missouri River creates magic along its banks. So much so, that the 149-mile stretch from Fort Benton to the James Kipp Recreation Area is designated a National Wild, Scenic, and Recreational River. This distinguished river is an excellent family float in canoes or rafts. It is also open to motorized boats. The Missouri flows gently past varied scenery which, in some sections, is spectacular. Floating down the river creates a sense of timelessness for travelers. Away from the hustle of daily life, visitors here can enter into the peaceful flow of life on the river.

One can imagine the experiences of the Lewis and Clark expedition as they pushed upstream on their legendary journey, or consider the challenges a homesteader must have faced on the spacious, but lonely, plains. The rugged breaks and limestone canyons that border the waterway lure floaters from the river to make discoveries on land. The riparian areas offer habitat to a variety of creatures. Deer, antelope, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, beavers, muskrats, otters, and other wildlife may be seen along the riverbanks or on the adjoining land. The white pelican, great blue heron, eagle, meadowlark, and various species of hawk are among the birds frequently observed along the river."
