Steamboat Lookout

Steamboat Lookout Professional Review and Guide

"This trail provides an accessible route to a former fire lookout site atop Steamboat Mountain, which commands sweeping views of the eastern side of the Scapegoat Wilderness. Follow the Elk Pass Trail westward from the trailhead, across grassy slopes above the north bank of Elk Creek. To the south, the many spires of Steamboat Mountain rise above a verdant forest of unburned timber.

The trail climbs gently into a flat basin, where it crosses a small feeder creek. The trail then begins to climb vigorously across hillsides burned in the 1988 Canyon Creek fire, finally reaching the low saddle of Elk Pass. At the pass, the trail forks. The right fork descends into the Smith Creek valley, while the trail to Steamboat Lookout turns southwest and continues to climb."
