Red Shale Meadows

Red Shale Meadows Professional Review and Guide

"The trail to Red Shale Meadows provides one of the most direct access routes to the North Wall. This trail meanders westward into the Gates Park burn, then turns northwest to follow the burned hills just out of sight of Red Shale Creek. The trail crosses a number of mudholes early on, but after several miles the condition of the path improves markedly. Early views through the scorched snags are highlighted by the reddish promontory of Lookout Mountain to the west, as well as a buff-colored pinnacle atop the North Wall farther to the north. As the valley bends around to the west, the grade steepens a bit, and the yellow cliffs of the North Wall unfold to the west. Passing the north slope of Lookout Mountain, the burn gives way to unbroken forest. The trail passes among the lush greenery for the next mile or so, crossing a few boggy bottomland spots."
