Jones Gulch

Jones Gulch Professional Review and Guide

"This trail offers a short day hike that is well known for its rugged scenery and easy access. The trail leaves the east side of the trailhead parking lot, heading northward past a beaver pond to reach a gate in a barbwire fence. Pass through and remember to close the gate behind you. The trail climbs gently across an open east-facing slope and a glance southward reveals the sharp points of Wind Mountain as well as the much larger massif of Ear Mountain beyond it.

The trail then passes another series of beaver ponds. The evidence of labor by beaver surrounds the ponds; aspens are cut off neatly about a foot above the ground, attesting to the voracious appetite of this oversized rodent. To the east, the hulking mass of Choteau Mountain looms above the lesser reefs of the Rocky Mountain Front. The actual summit of the mountain lies atop the more smooth-sided southerly peak, not the more jagged northern rib."
