Home Gulch Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Sun River glistens in this steep canyon as it flows east from its headwaters in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Only a shadow of its former wild self, the Sun is now tamed by the Gibson Dam. The landscape is dramatic here where plains collide with the leading edge of the Rocky Mountain front. Combine the setting with the wealth of wildlife, and it’s easy to understand the river’s importance to the Blackfeet Indians. To them this is Medicine River, a part of their homeland which valiant ancestors fought to protect. It was included within the original Blackfeet reservation boundaries in 1855, but as the boundaries were redefined in 1865, 1868, and 1873, the tribe’s territory shrank. Today the reservation boundaries are over 50 miles away.

As you drive to the campground along Sun Canyon Road you’ll see a bighorn-sheep viewing area. One of the largest herds in North America lives here, lured by the same spectacular topography that invites tenters to make camp in the shadow of overthrust formations along the shoreline. Set among thick stands of aspens, sites are well spaced, and most have a nice amount of ground cover providing privacy between them."
