Crown Mountain

Crown Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"Without a doubt, this trail offers the most scenic route into the Scapegoat Wilderness. The trail begins on the eastern bank of aptly-named Whitewater Creek, and climbs inland through a loose forest of lodgepole pine as it runs southward. Openings in the trees allow spectacular views of Crown Mountain, which dominates the rugged reefs of the Front Range.

The path approaches the creek bottom once more before climbing steadily into the pass that separates the Whitewater and Petty Creek drainages. After crossing this low divide, the trail turns southwest and ascends moderately along the south-facing slope of a spur ridge. The open forest here allows fantastic views of Haystack Butte, which rises like a painted obelisk above the grassy swells of the High Plains."
