Georgetown Lake

Georgetown Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Easily accessible, Georgetown Lake ranks as one of western Montana’s most popular fishing spots. The surrounding mountains: the Flint Creek Range to the north and the Pintlers to the south also see their fair share of recreationists during backpacking season and the fall big game season. Georgetown Lake is a large (3,000-acre), high (over 6,000 feet) mountain lake that tends to be a bit shallow. It is a very productive lake, as evidenced by the extensive weedbeds and by the excellent fishery.

Kokanee salmon and rainbow trout are the most fished for species in Georgetown Lake, with brook trout somewhat down the scale. Both the salmon and brook trout populations are self-sustaining, while rainbow are planted annually by FWP. The average size of rainbow has been increasing recently, and 4-pound ‘bows are not uncommon. FWP also reports a few lake trout are being taken, including a 15-pounder in the summer of 1991. As with most lakes, Georgetown seems to have its share of nongame fish, such as suckers, but they are rarely caught by anglers."
