This is a beautiful hiker-only trail that loops through the Red Hills in the Little Yellow Creek watershed. If the distance seems a little short, visit some of the other nearby trails in the refuge. A picturesque visitor center set on the shores of Bluff Lake offers interpretive displays and other trail information. It also has a picnic area overlooking Bluff Lake. This hike, the Scattertown Trail, travels through numerous hardwoods in the Red Hills, which makes this loop trail a good fall color destination. However, the refuge is a popular hunting locale, so check ahead of time for hunting dates and also be prepared to wear orange during such times if you choose to hike.
