The Marathon Hiking Trail, despite its name, is actually a short path that cruises around Marathon Lake, named for the Marathon Lumber Company, which once operated in this area and built the lake. The trail circles the fifty-acre impoundment, and includes a wetland boardwalk and good views from many places. Hiking is but one element of the Marathon Lake recreation experience, which includes fishing, camping, picnicking, boating, and bicycling. The Marathon Hiking Trail starts near the boat ramp, beside a small dock. Turn left and head north as you face the lake. The campground is to your left behind a thin screen of trees. Short paths connect the campsites to the lake. You are actually walking the grassy margin between fifty-acre Marathon Lake and the wooded campground. Campers and other visitors may be bank fishing from the grassy shore. Tall pine trees shade the shore in the afternoon.
