"This is simply one of the best hiking trails in Mississippi. The 13-plus-mile trek wanders through a remote section of the De Soto National Forest, along pine hills where a longleaf/wiregrass ecosystem reigns, and dipping into streams and wetlands among bay, holly, and magnolia trees. The last part sidles along Tuxachanie Creek, a secluded blackwater stream that adds yet another ecological component to the hike. Locals use the first part of the trail, near US 49, for strolls. The trail immediately heads due east, joining an old railroad grade built by Dantzler Lumber Company to reach their sawmill. Immediately bridge a small sluggish stream. Note the gum trees along the water’s edge. The path leaves the grade and enters pine woods with yaupon understory, along with dogwood, hickory, and a few oaks as well." Read more
