Black Creek Trail from Janice Landing

Black Creek Trail from Janice Landing Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Trail was the apex of hiking in the Magnolia State, but Hurricane Katrina damaged the trail. It will take a while before the reopened trail again reaches its full potential. However, the path is still a rewarding experience.

It travels not only along the clear waterway and on bluffs above it, but also over side creeks and swamps spanned by boardwalks and footbridges. Open pine forests in the hill country that abut the Black Creek floodplain offer a final ecosystem to enjoy along the way."

Tried to hike from Janice Landing north to Moody's Landing. About 1 mile north of Janice Landing the trail becomes impassable through a swampy area. Worked around it on forest roads and picked up trail about 2/3 mile past that point. Hike is boring except along Creek. NOTE - no dry crossing when trail reaches Moody's Landing!

Since 8 miles of the trail are open, you must start it at the CCC camp right off highway 49. From there it is about an 8 mile hike to big creek landing. You will immediately cross highway 49. The first part of the hike is through somewhat dense forest, so beware of ticks in the first 2-3 miles. After that it is a pretty easy, but sort of boring...until you get to Black Creek. Around there the hike gets a bit more scenic because of the sand beds alongside the creek, which is where I camped out for the night. Overall, the camping alongside the creek was good, but the hike not so much.

Hurricane Katrina has closed this trail until January. Help has come from far away as Montana to clear all the trails in the DeSoto National Forest.
