We hiked this trail on Memorial Day weekend after reading so many good reviews. It was hot and sticky but worst of all was an out of control mosquito population. I know, this is the woods, and this is hiking, but we passed at least 6 other groups of hikers who had turned around after being chased out by the skeeters. We did not hike the entire trail, opted for the first 5.2 miles, but we did it in a hurry to ward of the pests. The overlooks of the Missouri River were beautiful, but unfortunately, we could not stay long enough to enjoy them. Don't know if we'll try it again. What we did see was nice, but would not warrant a second visit when there are so many others to see in Missouri. However, out of fairness, we would have enjoyed the trail much better if we could have walked it at a leisurely pace and stopped to smell the wildflowers for even a few seconds at a time. We did have repellent and even though it worked well enough to keep from getting bit, the swarm that followed us through about 4.5 miles of the 5.2 mile section was quite annoying.
