Green’s Cave Bushwhack Hamilton Hollow Route

Green’s Cave Bushwhack: Hamilton Hollow Route Professional Review and Guide

"If the beautiful mural of Green’s Cave and Bluff at Meramec State Park’s visitor center lights your fire, here’s the first of two unmarked “bushwhack” routes to see it firsthand.

Along the way you’ll see a cave, springs, and an abandoned iron smelter. Bring your topo map and compass—and your camera—on this wild hike. Due to overgrowth and ticks, this hike is best done between late October and March."

Dark Hallow is a beautiful hike. I hiked it during the winter, and thus avoided the snake problem for which the hollow is notorious. There are a number of downed trees due to a blow down in the area, so the hiking can be a bit slow and require crawling over some of the trees. I will certainly return.

Lower Rock Creek and Cathedral Canyon provide a really nice quiet geteway for overnight campers. Doesn't seem like an overly trampled area. However, watch out for those @$!*%ing cotton mouth snakes! I would have given this trail 5 stars if it wasn't for those little bastards.
