Meramec Conservation Area

Meramec Conservation Area Professional Review and Guide

"In these forested hills and hollows, trails of varying lengths wind along the Meramec River, climb to a panoramic overlook of a horseshoe bend, meander along intermittent streams, visit an abandoned fire lookout, and wander past springs and caves.

With the 1.3 mile paved Woodland Trail, the 6-mile Old Reedville School Trail, and the 10-mile J. Avery Ruble Bridle Trail, there’s a hike for every level of backcountry wanderer at Meramec Conservation Area."

I hiked the southern loop. This was a nice trail. I would love to take more time and backpack it for a weekend. There were a couple of things I did not like about this trail. First- there really was really only a couple of places where you could get good water, and second, you can really hear the road at most of the campsites. Other than that it was great and I plan on doing it again.

This was my families first attempt at backpacking. The trail is very secnic and not extremmely hard. However we went during the summer and only found 1 source for water. Even after a heavy thunderstorm during the night on the trail we found no water holes. There are several campsites just off the trail about the 5-6 mile marker. One other thing the last half of the trail is more difficult so we chose to walk the trail backwards, we had a 7 year old boy with us and he handled it fine. This is not a challenging course but a very nice one for a family who wants to spend a night camping away from the people or for just someone wanting to get away for the day.
